Side by Side: Face Oil and Beauty Balm

Badger Face Oil and Badger Beauty Balm

Cleansing oil, face oil, and beauty balm – oh my! Choices in life are a good thing, but sometimes they can be a little overwhelming. Since the release of our Face Care line last fall, we’ve received a number of questions from Badger fans all over the world. A recurring theme is: “should I use the Face Oil and Beauty Balm? One or the other? What is the difference?”

Those questions and more are answered below in this side-by-side comparison of Badger’s Face Oil and Beauty Balm.

What the product is intended for:

Face Oil: daily moisturizing. Face Oil is an alternative to lotions and creams, and lighter-bodied than serums.

Beauty Balm: intensive moisturizing. Beauty Balm can target dry patches, or be used as a treatment such as a mask.

Does this mean you shouldn’t use Beauty Balm daily? Not at all! In fact, in the winter I use it daily on my face, morning and night, to combat the one-two punch of cold/dry air outside and hot/dry air inside. However, using Beauty Balm daily on the face is not for everyone. So if you are looking for a moisturizer to use post-cleansing, best to start with a Face Oil and see how it goes.

Ingredient breakdown:

Note: Badger makes four different variations of Face Oil and Beauty Balm, but for the purpose of this comparison, we will look only at the key ingredients. As always, the full ingredient lists can be found on our website, as well as on the product packaging.

Face Oil Key Ingredients (USDA Certified Organic):

Jojoba is an excellent and effective emollient for skin and hair, thanks to it being nearly identical to human sebum. Because of this, it helps to balance oil production over time. It protects, moisturizes and replenishes skin while restoring a healthy glow. Its high vitamin E content promotes regeneration of skin cells. And it penetrates deeply helping skin to retain moisture. Fun fact: Jojoba “oil” isn’t really oil, it’s a liquid wax!

Baobab Oil is highly moisturizing, emollient, and rich in vitamins A, D, E, and essential fatty acids. It’s ideal for treating dry and damaged skin, while softening it and encouraging cell regeneration. It absorbs quickly and is non-greasy. Baobab is especially helpful in improving skin’s elasticity without clogging pores.

Pomegranate Oil hydrates and soothes extra-dry skin. Rich with antioxidants, this oil helps keep skin looking young, and might even reverse past skin damage by encouraging cell regeneration. Punicic acid gives pomegranate oil anti-inflammatory properties, as well.

These key ingredients, which are the base of all the Face Oil formulas, combine to create a lightweight moisturizer that is loaded with skin-soothing benefits. There are no fillers or cheap oils– only 100% nourishing goodness!

Beauty Balm Key Ingredients (USDA Certified Organic):

Beeswax acts as an occlusive, reducing moisture loss and protecting skin from the elements. It’s also responsible for turning oil into balm, by thickening it. It has an almost immediate soothing effect on skin cracks and fissures, making it an ideal ingredient for extra-dry skin. Beeswax is the biggest differentiation between Badger Face Oil and Beauty Balm.

Rosehip extract helps to improve skin’s texture and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It contains a bounty of fatty acids, which helps to keep the skin plump and moist. It has amazing powers of cell restoration, and has been used for generations to maintain healthy skin and treat sun damage.

Seabuckthorn extract contains a bounty of vitamin C and unsaturated essential fatty acids. Like rosehip, it has remarkable restorative properties and helps maintain healthy skin.

These key ingredients are in a base of either USDA Certified Organic sunflower oil or extra virgin olive oil, and combine to make really potent skin rejuvenators. So much so that I’ve taken to keeping a jar of the Unscented Beauty Balm in my medicine cabinet at all times.

Where to apply for best results:

Both Face Oil and Beauty Balm are great when applied to face, but some folks get nervous about breakouts. Face Oil has been tested and approved non-comedogenic, meaning it will definitely not clog your pores. Beauty Balm contains ingredients that rate low on the comedogenic scale, but it has not been dermatologist tested.

Beauty Balm can be applied just about anywhere on the body. It’s important to remember that the tops of our hands are exposed to sun every day, so daily application of Beauty Balm on hands could be especially beneficial. It’s also a treat for lips, and feels great on pregnant belly itch.
